A theatre arts is a higher education program that studies theatre arts, design and management.

Career in Education

1. Preschool teacher

For infants to pre-K age children, preschool teachers often use storytelling techniques like drama and puppetry to teach lessons and engage children. Having a theatre major’s creativity, dynamic personality and time management skills will help you manage this type of classroom.

2. Drama teacher

A drama teacher, also known as a theatre teacher, works in a school or community setting, instructing students about the history of theatre, directing student plays and promoting a love of art, theatre and music.

3. Acting coach

An acting coach can use their theatre education and experience to help new or veteran actors improve their skills, practice new or advanced techniques or prepare for an upcoming role. These professionals may work at a theatre, for a theatre troupe or company or as an independent contractor.

4. Dance instructor

A dance instructor teaches children, teens and adults how to perform a variety of dances. When teaching children, they may focus on ballet, jazz, tap or contemporary and hold recitals for the dancers to showcase their skills. With adults, they typically teach ballroom dancing or forms of contemporary dance. They may work in a school, a dance studio, at a theatre or for a community organization.

5. Theatre professor

After earning a master’s or doctorate degree, theatre majors can become theatre professors who teach college students basic and advanced acting techniques, playwriting, directing and theatre management. They may direct student-acted plays, oversee student-directed projects, teach special courses and workshops and assess performances and projects by providing constructive feedback.

Career in business and management

6. Theatre librarian

A theatre librarian organizes, catalogs and purchases plays, collects historical theatre artifacts and helps theatres, directors and producers find their next show. They may work at a theatre or university.

7. Theatre operations manager

This theatre management professional is in charge of the everyday operations of the organization, including securing funding, managing budgets, promoting shows, partnering with directors and producers to bring shows to the stage and improving audience engagement and community relations.

8. Marketing coordinator

In theatre, a marketing coordinator creates and publishes the marketing content for a show or theatre’s lineup. They may collaborate with other marketing and advertising professionals to manage social media, create flyers and ads and manage the marketing and advertising budget.

9. Creative director

A theatre major can become a creative director of a theatre, school, community organization or museum where they set creative standards and goals, secure artists, talent and staff, manage a budget and create strong community and business partnerships.

Career in mental health and community services

10. Drama therapist

A drama therapist uses various principles of theatre — such as role-playing, performance, storytelling, music and writing — to help patients with mental health or behavioral conditions and different learning abilities improve their emotional well-being and problem-solving abilities.

11. Community arts coordinator

A community arts coordinator works for a school or community organization to plan creative programs, including those related to theatre, music and fine arts. They collaborate with community leaders and local artists to engage different community groups, including children, teens, adults and seniors.
