Night of the scorpion
My father, a sceptic, and rationalist,
-Revathi
tried every curse and blessing,
powder, mixture, herb, and hybrid.
He even poured a little paraffin
upon the bitten toe and put a match to it.
I watched the flame feeding on my mother.
I watched the holy man perform his rites
to tame the poison with an incantation.
After twenty hours it lost its sting
Where the mind is without fear
Where the mind is without fear

and the head is held high,
Where knowledge is free.
Where the world has
not been broken up into fragments,
by narrow domestic walk.
Where words come out
from the depth of truth
Where tireless striving stretches
its arms to perfection.
Where the clear stream of reason
has not lost its way.
Into the dreamy desert sand
of dead hob it.
Where the mind is led forward by three.
Into ever-widening thought and action,
Into that heaven of freedom,
my father let my country awake.
